The Role of Field Work Practice (PKL) in Developing Soft Skills and Work Readiness of Vocational High School Students in the Industrial Era 4.0

This study investigates the crucial role of Field Work Practice (PKL) programs in enhancing the soft skills
and work readiness of vocational high school (SMK) students in the context of the Industry 4.0 era. As
industries increasingly demand employees who possess not only technical expertise but also critical soft
skills like communication, teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving, Field Work Practice programs
are increasingly important to align learning outcomes in schools with the demands of the industrial
world. Field Work Practice allows students to obtain direct workplace experience, which is invaluable
in developing a range of soft skills necessary for success in the workplace. This study adopts a literature
review methodology to analyze a range of scholarly articles, reports, and policy documents related to
PKL. The findings reveal that while PKL programs traditionally focus on technical skills, they also significantly contribute to the development of essential soft skills. Students involved in structured Field
Work Practices report improved communication abilities, stronger teamwork, better time management,
and enhanced adaptability. Moreover, Field Work Practices boosts students’ self-confidence and their
readiness to enter the labor market. However, the study also identifies challenges such as the need for
stronger school-industry collaboration and more comprehensive mentoring during Field Work Practices. To maximize the benefits of PKL programs, it is recommended that schools and industries work
together more closely to ensure that Field Work Practices are well-organized, targeted toward skill development, and provide valuable feedback and guidance to students throughout their experience.
