CHARACTERIZATION OF COPPER DEPOSIT ON ELECTROPLATING OF AISI 1024 STEEL

Abstract


Electroplating process is coating of metal surfaces with other metals to prevent corrosion and give decorative feature. It is widely known and practised in industry from large to home scale industries. For home industries, it is not always available to them to have fully equipped electroplating bath as for larger scale industries. To know the quality of such process, the research was conducted to imitate the condition of home industries' electroplating process. In the research, a AISI 1024 Steel plate was coated with copper on simple electrolytic bath with variation of process time, voltage, and current density. The electrolytic bath contains of CuSO4 5 H2O, H2SO4, and H2O. The cathode used 99% copper and AISI 1024 steel for anode. The plating products then measured for deposit thickness and examined for microstructure using SEM. The results showed that for 10 minutes average, 4 volts voltage gave optimal thickness with point dendrites of 16 μm by 13 μm. When the process times varied, the optimum rate of deposit was at 10 minutes with point dendrites of the average grain size 16.2 μm, and the average length of dendrites 10.8 μm.
