This paper aims to describe the efforts of strengthening Islamic Bank laboratory of Economic and Business Faculty of Muhammadiyah University Malang in pioneering the establishment of Islamic Rural Banking (BPRS) that can be optimized as a model and learning source for undergraduate students of Diploma 3 program of Banking finance in particular and students of Economic faculty in general. Practical learning process will have a substantial impact on the increased competence of the graduates in being more proficient to operate and manage Islamic bank to respond the need of human resources required by Islamic banking industry of Indonesia. In a long term period, BPRS laboratory is expected to be the means in implementing public service by enhancing the role of financial access of micro businesses and a model of developing a sound financial institution of micro Islamic bank. Some enhancement programs have actually been done during 2014-2015 such as increasing the quality of the facilities of laboratory services to comfort the customers, improving the management, completing the availability of laboratory facilities by providing real banking software as well as designing the learning system that is able to increase the graduate’s competence in operating Islamic bank. The impact of this strengthening program is the laboratory capacity in accumulating fund, distributing financing with controlled risks as well as enhancing graduate competence based on the users evaluation. The outcome of this strengthening program is the apparent laboratory’s capacity to support the sustainability of study program.
