WhatsApp for education: Improving students’ speaking ability in pandemic Covid-19

Abstract


In pandemic covid-19, the learning process shifted to online learning. MA Al Fatah decided to use several online applications. In English subject, the teacher chooses WhatssApp because it is more practical and less expensive. This study aims to improve students' speaking ability using WhatsApp. The subjects of this study were 29 students from class 10 MA Al Fatah of the 2020/2021 academic year. This research is a classroom action research (CAR) with a qualitative approach. Data collections were collected through observation, simulation and test. In cycle II, the results obtained are very significant so that the cycle stops. The results of the second cycle showed that the students' speaking ability improved. The increase in student learning outcomes in the first cycle was 31% and the second cycle was 100%. From this research, the use of WhatsApp in learning English can improve students' speaking ability.
